South Gran Canaria
South Gran Canaria is the island's sunniest coast and its main holiday area, stretching along the shores of San Bartolomé de Tirajana and Mogán from Bahía Feliz to Puerto de Mogán. Lying in the rain shadow of the central mountains, it sees very little rain and averages around 24 °C, so the beaches can be enjoyed all year. Tourism began here in the 1960s with the Maspalomas Costa Canaria project, whose first hotel opened in San Agustín in 1965. Maspalomas and Playa del Inglés share almost six kilometres of beach backed by the protected Maspalomas Dunes, the Charca lagoon and a 19th-century lighthouse. Playa del Inglés is the liveliest resort, and its Yumbo Centre is the heart of one of Europe's best-known LGBTQ+ scenes and of the annual Maspalomas Pride. Meloneras has a seafront promenade lined with upscale hotels, restaurants and a golf course, while San Agustín and Bahía Feliz offer quieter beaches and family-friendly stays. Further west in Mogán, Arguineguín keeps its fishing port and Tuesday market, Puerto Rico and Amadores have sheltered beaches and a large marina, and Taurito lies in its own small bay. Puerto de Mogán, called "little Venice" for its canals and bridges, has a marina and a Friday market with around 500 stalls. The GC-1 motorway links the whole coast with Gran Canaria Airport, about 32 km from Maspalomas and 45 km from the Mogán coast. Most of the island's hotels, all-inclusive resorts, bungalow complexes and apartments are found here, which makes the south the first choice for beach holidays, families and couples.
