Migjorn

Es Migjorn Gran, often simply called Migjorn, is a traditional whitewashed village in the southern interior of Menorca, sitting quietly at the heart of the Migjorn limestone plateau between Es Mercadal to the north and the beaches of Santo Tomas and Son Bou to the south. The village maintains an authentically Menorcan atmosphere with a compact centre of narrow streets, a handsome parish church, a handful of local bars and restaurants, and a weekly market that draws residents from across the southern half of the island. Es Migjorn Gran is considered one of Menorca's best-kept gastronomic secrets, with several restaurants offering creative interpretations of traditional Menorcan cuisine using locally sourced ingredients — from farmhouse cheeses and artisan sobrasada to seasonal vegetables and fresh seafood brought up from the coast. The village sits at the head of the Barranc de Son Fideu, a deep limestone ravine that winds southward through a lush gorge of holm oaks, wild olives, and aromatic herbs to eventually reach the coastline near the beach of Binigaus. This barranco walk is one of the finest inland hiking routes on Menorca, following a well-marked path through dappled shade that emerges at a wild beach accessible only on foot. Es Migjorn Gran's position makes it the natural gateway to the southern beaches: Santo Tomas is just four kilometres south via a scenic drive through the barranco, while Son Bou and Cala Galdana are both within fifteen minutes by car. The village celebrates its own patron saint festival with traditional horse games similar to those of Ciutadella and Alaior, filling the streets with music, dancing, and the spectacular sight of rearing black Menorcan horses. Rural finca hotels and country houses in the surrounding countryside offer a peaceful alternative to coastal accommodation, appealing to visitors who prefer green inland landscapes to beach-resort settings. Es Migjorn Gran's combination of authentic village life, outstanding restaurants, spectacular gorge walking, and easy access to multiple southern beaches makes it a favourite among discerning travellers who want to experience the genuine heart of rural Menorca.
